Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Sunday 09 June
Downtown Vancouver - 4pm - 2 Hours
Patou Lauwers
We will be using various techniques to maximise the behaviour of the light. Backlighting is one of my favourites and can be used for portraiture or nature. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.

This was a well appreciated event for me. I have been yearning to get out and explore long exposure photography and having a guide work with our small group of three was exactly what I needed to practise this skill and learn a few tricks.

This was my second outing with the group and I found it fun and informative. Although the sunlight wasn't fully cooperative, there was still ample lighting to explore the genre and Gabriel makes a great tour guide. I appreciate these events as it gives me an avenue to expand my photographic expertise and my creative eye.

It was a great experience to meet up with a varied group of photo enthusiasts and embark upon a journey with the intent to capture theme related images in a public setting. There seemed to be a balanced mix of discussion relating to choice of lenses and photographic styles with personal conversations on how we each came to be at this particular meet up. I am happy to have participated in this event and look forward to joining others like it in the future.

While Spring brings out the Cherry Blossoms in Vancouver, it also yields an array of Magnolias, to which I've always been partial. This particular Magnolia was situated perfectly, affording me the opportunity to get that day's gorgeous sky as background. This is photo entry 1 of a project I decided I wanted to start. That project or challenge, is to photograph every bird in Canada. No idea how long it'll will take me and I don't even know all the birds in Canada! It will be a fun journey which I'm working on doing regular posts on instagram and maybe eventually creating a site to follow along with fun bird facts or what it was like seeing the bird.

Title or Location: on the North side of Sunset Beach facing the mountains
I had just bought a new Canon EOS R7 and was exploring various light conditions and settings on my camera. On March 4,2024, at 5:48 I took a blown out picture of the sunset looking towards Kitsalano Beach. The sun was gone and I turned around and saw this fiery red afterglow on the East side of the channel. I just used auto settings and had a semi dark pic. Only editing was brightening the shadows and slightly refining the definition to bring out the tree branches. and voila!

Thank you for the consideration. Background to this photo.A couple of years ago on our local community page I saw a photo of a tree covered in bioluminescent fungi saying it was found in Gerroa, 5 minutes drive from me. Wow how amazing, so I set out to find it and photography it too. Since then I developed an interest in fungi and look forward to Autumn when there is plenty about. To enable me to photograph ghost fungi ( omphalotus nidiformis) I go for a bush walk during the day mostly
