Using Light & Shadow in Photography

Saturday 06 September
West End - 10am - 2 Hours
Behrooz Naseri Esfahani
Light and shadow photography is a type of photography that focuses on capturing the interplay between light and shadow in a particular scene. This style of photography often produces dramatic and compelling images that can evoke strong emotions in the viewer.

Harsh light and the contrast between light and shadow can provide some interesting photo
opportunities, as well as some challenges!

In this meetup, we will be looking at how you can use your camera's settings to nail the exposure.

GROUP
Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Vancouver.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Vancouver Photography Group on Facebook to share your photos after the session.

John was professional and helpful. The event was pretty wet but that's Vancouver. Needing to go inside was way to busy due to it being a Sat and a cruise ship in as well. On rainy days a different venue would have been ideal. Other than that is was fun, got out and met people I would never have met was a bonus. I'm looking forward to the begginers class in a few weeks.

This was a great introduction to studio photography and portraits, for me, having no previous experience with this genre. There was a good mix of participants and each had time to gain comfort developing their model/photographer relationship and practise capturing "the shot". Overall a great experience and opportunity to meet new people with a passion for photography.

The host was extremely engaging, informative and helpful, made everyone feel welcome and comfortable. The best part of the class was the "hands'on" experience of being able to work with and take some portrait shots of a model. Thank you so much!

Knowledgeable and welcoming host, eager to share his experience and expertise. Made everyone feel welcome regardless of our skill level. Liked how the focus was on the human side of studio photography and not just technical details. I also appreciated how accommodating he was for everyone?s input to be of value. A good teacher - positive, genuine.

Sam has a strong professional grounding in photography. He communicates well, provides learning tasks and is open to feedback. The studio session was well structured with the opportunity to shoot a model as if doing a paid shoot. Highly recommended.

It was fun. Soroush gave lots of tips and we had an opportunity to photograph the model in whatever pose we wanted. She was very enthusiastic and accommodating. I appreciated Saroush?s gentle correction of my camera settings.

This image was composed using a largely forgotten methodology I refer to as asymmetrical balance combined with the brightness/weight illusion?a visual principle cultivated by artists over several centuries. This approach offers a reason-based, articulable framework for image composition. One of its unique advantages is that cropping is often unnecessary the resulting photograph tends to match the artist?s original intent with clarity and precision. To learn more about this technique, you can

Taken from my recent trip in Paris last May 28, 2025. It was still sunny even though it was already 8pm. I took as much photos that I can to get the perfect shot of this beauty and it was really my dream to see this in person. I used my Sony A7iii with 28-75mm f2.8 G2 lens here which I just bought in the secondary market 2 weeks prior the trip. Settings for this picture was 1/2500 sec, f2.8, ISO400. I edited this picture using Adobe Lightroom mobile. I would say that going back to my hobby was

I had spent the better part of the day moving silently through the edges of the chase looking to photograph deer. It was one of those days that seemed perfect on paper: overcast skies that softened the light, barely a breath of wind, and a camera battery at full charge. But nature is nothing if not humbling. The deer remained ghost-like, unseen despite hours of quiet patience and soft steps.By late afternoon my hopes had dimmed so I began the slow walk back to the car. The path wound through

CPKC Rail Engine 9350 plus one heading east out of Winnipeg to deliver it's freight to Eastern Canada and possibly countries beyond on this beautiful summer day. Engine 9350 is a Diesel/Electric Locomotive which was built in February 2012 by General Electric and produces 4400HP which is capable to propel it to a top speed of 75mph. I love to photograph trains whenever I get a chance. To me they are iconic.

The photo was taken on the shore of Lake Ontario at Woodbine Beach Park. Whenever you take a photo of a sunrise or sunset, it is difficult to predict how nature will show you. Sometimes expectations are not met, but sometimes you receive a modest but magnificent gift. There was a small puddle on the shore of the lake from a recent rain and it was in it that the miracle of the sunrise appeared. Shot on a Samsung 21s mobile phone and processed in the phone in the Snapseed program.
