Street Photography

Saturday 31 May
Granville Island - 10am - 2 Hours
John Phillips
People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.

We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

This was a great introduction to studio photography and portraits, for me, having no previous experience with this genre. There was a good mix of participants and each had time to gain comfort developing their model/photographer relationship and practise capturing "the shot". Overall a great experience and opportunity to meet new people with a passion for photography.

The host was extremely engaging, informative and helpful, made everyone feel welcome and comfortable. The best part of the class was the "hands'on" experience of being able to work with and take some portrait shots of a model. Thank you so much!

Knowledgeable and welcoming host, eager to share his experience and expertise. Made everyone feel welcome regardless of our skill level. Liked how the focus was on the human side of studio photography and not just technical details. I also appreciated how accommodating he was for everyone?s input to be of value. A good teacher - positive, genuine.

Sam has a strong professional grounding in photography. He communicates well, provides learning tasks and is open to feedback. The studio session was well structured with the opportunity to shoot a model as if doing a paid shoot. Highly recommended.

It was fun. Soroush gave lots of tips and we had an opportunity to photograph the model in whatever pose we wanted. She was very enthusiastic and accommodating. I appreciated Saroush?s gentle correction of my camera settings.

This was the first time attending any kind of photo workshop/walk. Generally it was a very enjoyable and challenging. I particularly liked the interaction with the other attendees and the instructor.

Another great event. This was my second time doing a long exposure event with Sangam. As an instructor, he is very knowledgable, informative, and proactive in finding good locations to shoot and advice on equipment to use.

What started as a joke 45 years ago turned into my life-long passion. Portraits, cityscapes, street photography, and landscapes all catch my eye. Sometimes colour, sometimes black and white, sometimes light and airy, sometimes dark and moody. I love it all, and love teaching and helping others sharpen their skills.
Let's go for a walk around town or shoot some portraits with studio lighting, and see what happens!

I plan to visit Japan during the sakura or cherry blossom season with my friends on our Asia trip in March-April 2025. It was in the middle of the day, full of people enjoying the site. I did not want to shoot Osaka Castle alone with people around it. I went a little further where the cherry blossom trees are and took many images with the trees in the foreground.

Title: ?Curious Drifter?Captured with the Sony A7 IV paired with a Sigma 150?600mm telephoto lens, this intimate portrait of a sea otter was taken from the deck of a gently rocking boat off the coast of British Columbia. To counteract the motion and ensure sharpness despite the unpredictable platform, I opted for a fast shutter speed of 1/1600 sec, with the lens rested against the boat?s edge for added stability. Shot at f/7.1 and ISO 500, the image retains a crisp balance of depth and detai

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E3 and my 55-200 lens at 200mm. I work across the street from the construction of this tower. I'm in the business so spent hours watching it going up and taking photos. In this case I was taking a late lunch walk and as usual, keeping an eye on the activity. The patterns with the blue and white caught my interest when this worker came out to look and I snapped about 9 pictures. This was my favourite and consequently didn't do much editing. I only made the blacks a bit

I love exploring Toronto, where I've been living for a while now, with a camera, or more often just with a mobile phone. And looking for unusual angles. This place in the center of downtown on King Street always looks different depending on the weather, time of day, wind... This time I was shooting late in the evening and waiting for the flag to straighten out.Shot on a Samsung s21 mobile phone, edited in an editor Snapseed/

This shot was taken along with 3000 others images on my first ever photo shoot during Covid. I hired a model I had seen and had come to do pool shots with another Photographer and he suggested I hire her and conceptualize the shoot. I?m not a professional and had no props but I bought some fabric and I used my leaf blower to make that effect. I periodically go back to those pictures and rework them with my iPhone apps for varying effects. You can see more of my work on Instagram. That day creat

Thank you for considering my photo for Photo of the Week! I have a number of bottle brush trees in my back yard, and birds love the blossoms when they bloom in the Spring. I usually see numerous hummingbirds and sparrows, but I saw this gorgeous bird one afternoon resting in the branches. I was able to get a couple of shots off before it flew away.
